Osmotherley, North Yorkshire
Worth The Trip
A North Yorkshire village that’s worth far more than a quick stop.
We’ve lost count of how many times we’ve visited Osmotherley over the years. Tucked away on the western edge of the North York Moors, it’s the kind of village that quietly wins you over and keeps pulling you back.
With stone cottages, welcoming pubs, excellent walking routes and views stretching across the surrounding countryside, it offers everything we look for in a Yorkshire village. Whether you’re visiting for a few hours or using it as a base to explore the moors, there’s plenty here to justify a detour.
One of our favourite local walks starts at the Sheep Wash, climbs steadily up Beacon Hill to the mast, continues across to the Lady Chapel and then drops back down into the village. It’s a route that was first shown to me years ago and has since become a regular route I’ve shared with friends.
After the walk, our usual stop is The Coffee Shop in Osmotherley. The coffee is excellent (nice and strong), the cakes homemade and the food never disappoints. More than anything, it feels like a local family business where people genuinely care about what they do. If you’re lucky, you’ll also be greeted by the resident spaniel who firmly believes he owns the place.
If you’re not stopping for long, there is a wonderful corner shop shower you can get sandwiches to go, cold drinks, ice cream and a teaser trove of all essential and non-essential items. On a Friday they sometimes run a curry night where you can pre-order a pheasant delightful dish with all the trimmings. With a very convenient bench outside the shop door, it is an ideal place to sit and watch the world go by for a quiet rest (you’ll need it, Osmotherly is hilly).
Some places impress you once, Osmotherley keeps pulling us back.
Dog friendly, perfect for walkers and cyclists
